It's a bit warmer in the studio today, so I've ditched the hat and I'm excited to share this latest watercolour with you!
This A4 watercolour painting captures a scene from near the meadows in Sudbury, Suffolk. If you know the area, there's a lovely walk – I think it's called the Railway Walk – right next to the meadows on Station Road. It follows where the old railway used to be, and this painting shows one of those beautiful paths.
Why Purple?
Here's where I broke the rules a bit. Instead of reaching for brown to paint the dirt path, I chose purple. Why? Because in art, there are no rules – you do what you want to do!
And speaking of rules, you know how every tutorial tells you to paint the background first? Well, I decided to do it last. That's what I wanted to do, and honestly, I had a lot of fun with it.
Capturing That Spring Freshness
The area with all the foliage was created using countless tiny dots – they drove me a little bit mad, I'll be honest! But I was really trying to capture that spring fresh green feeling you get when you go for a walk and everything's lush and new.
I used a lot of yellows and greens, but here's another twist: I also used indigo and blue in areas where you'd normally expect to see green. I wanted to experiment with different colours to give the painting a unique feel and capture the essence of those beautiful Suffolk meadows in springtime.
This watercolour on A4 paper is available to buy as a print or framed print. What do you think of the purple path?
